Prison Ministry
Keeping with the Ignatian tradition of being people for others, our ministries are an opportunity to put our faith into action while building community. We invite you to discern how to share your gifts with others!
"When I was in prison, you visited me." (matt 25:36)
A group of parishioners from St. Ignatius attend Mass at the medium and minimum security units at Stony Mountain Institution (SMI). Following Mass, volunteers visit with the male prisoners either individually or in small groups.
This volunteer role requires good listening skills, compassion, understanding, and open-mindedness. Evangelization is not the focus of our visit; we provide a compassionate presence. Through this, volunteers often see glimpses of redemption and hear healing stories that can inspire us to continue serving in this rewarding ministry.
Prospective volunteers are encouraged to meet with us to learn more about the details of our ministry, such as time commitments, transportation to SMI, what to expect at during a visit, etc. Currently, the prison chaplain celebrates Mass three Saturdays per month at 7 pm in the chapel within the medium security unit and deacons hold a Communion service at the minimum unit every Sunday at 3 pm. While we certainly don’t expect volunteers to be able to attend every Mass, we do encourage them to commit for one Mass per month. The Volunteer Coordinator at SMI will provide information on how to undergo a background clearance, obtain an ID badge and any other formal processes that are necessary to enter the facility.
If you feel called to join the ministry and would like more information, please contact us via the parish office: office@stignatius.ca
